In the August 26, 2007, issue of Garfield, we see Garfield trying to figure out Odie’s breed. He looks at a book and ponders for a while before saying, “Ah, here you are…purebred clown.”

Though he frequently makes Odie the target of his jokes and antics, Garfield appears to have affection for his canine companion on the inside. Odie periodically exacts revenge on Garfield in the Garfield comics, and it’s implied that he has a more nuanced side that surfaced only when he was by himself.

They typically weigh between 15 and 25 pounds and stand 10 to 15 inches tall at the shoulder. They have expressive eyes and large, floppy ears, just like beagles.
