What is Merchant Navy? The title Merchant Navy was given by King George V on the British Merchant Navy shipping given their services in the First World War. Till now many countries have also used that name or similar such as Merchant Marines. Merchant Navy or Merchant Marines is the group of merchant’s vessels that are registered in a different particular country. A huge number of employees are also working with the merchant navy. Most of the import and export business is dependent on the merchant navy it carries goods and delivers to one country to another country.

British Merchant Navy

The British Merchant Navy contains British ships that transport cargo and people from one country to other during both the time of peace and war. It was the largest merchant group in the world, but it slipped down in the ranking because of British Empire declines in the 20th century. Canadian Merchant Navy

In World War II Canada created its shipping merchant navy the Canadian merchant navy. Canadian merchant navy played a great role in the Battle of the Atlantic it was established in the year 1939. Canadian merchant marines were trained in a school at St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. Thousands of Canadian people work in the Merchant Navy.

Greek Merchant Navy

Greek Merchant Navy has the merchant vessels owned by a Greek citizen, raising either the Greek flag or flag of convenience. Greek Merchant is the largest in the world which controls 23.2% of the global total merchant fleet. By tradition also Greek is a seafaring nation, and the oldest business of the Greeks was shipping. For all kinds of vessels, the Greek Merchant Navy is ranked in the top including tankers and bulk carriers.

Indian Merchant Navy:

Indian Merchant Navy was established before independence from the United Kingdom when SS Loyalty traveled by sea from India to Britain in 1919. India is the highest supplier of officers to the world for the Merchant Navy. Around 13% of the officer are appointed from India to global Merchant. Regarding total DWT India ranked 15 in the world.

New Zealand Merchant Navy

Approximate 3000 New Zealanders worked in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. Many of the New Zealand vessels were registered in London because of insurance purposes. New Zealander collaborated in the second world war sailed the ship to deliver food, fuel, military equipment and troops across the world ocean.

In World War, I and II many civilian volunteers lost their lives around 70 have lost their lives in I World War and around 140 have lost their lives in II World War, and many numbers of volunteers were taken to prison. Most of New Zealand had worked with the British Merchant Navy, and the enemy sank around 64 ships. They had to face significant risks during the war, and therefore they were regarded as the fourth service besides the army, navy and air force.

Pakistani Merchant Navy

In 1947 Pakistan Merchant Navy was formed. The government of Pakistan established The Ministry of Port and Shipping, Mercantile Marine Department, and Shipping office and were authorized to flag the ships and to check the vessels were seaworthy. All these private companies got together and formed the National Shipping Corporation (NSC) and the Pakistan Shipping Corporation (PSC). Both the corporation had an official flag on their ships. Pakistan got a significant loss of its vessels in the Indo-Pak war in 1971 by the hands of Indians.

Therefore in 1974 the President of Pakistan bought both the corporation together and nationalized as Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) with the aim to restructure the Pakistan Merchant Navy. Now the corporation has a good overseas network for his worldwide shipping business. The head office of Pakistan Merchant Navy is located in Karachi and Lahore there is a regionally based office for upcountry shipping requirements.

Polish Merchant Navy

In the war period when the Second Polish Republic got independence, The Polish Merchant Navy called in Polish as (Polska Marynarka Handlowa PMH) was created. To contribute to World War II, many Polish Merchant Ships joined the allies. The Polish Merchant Navy was looked at by the Peoples Republic of Poland after the war and after 1989 by modern Poland. The Polish Merchant Navy contains bulk carriers, chemical tankers, general cargo, and short-sea passenger ships also.

Swiss Merchant Marine

The Swiss Merchant Navy was created in 1941 during the second World War for supplying the basic needs of goods in Switzerland. The homeport of Switzerland in Basel and the first ship was purchased and operated by the government during world war I to supply primary resources in Switzerland. After World War, a privately owned merchant shipping got merged by the government subsidies that can be paid for sailing operation till 1953. In 2010 a group of 37 ships came under the swiss flag which contains the bulk carrier, container ships, and tankers.

U.S. Merchant Marine:

The civilians work for Merchant Marines are called “merchant mariners.”  According to the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, the people who work for merchant marines are all civilians except in times of war. The merchant marines control civilian ships which are used both for import and export during peacetime. It also supports the Navy during the war period transporting both troops and supplies.

Both men and women work in the crew. As of 2012, the U.S. Merchant fleet is numbered approximately 465 ships and as of 70000 people working. It consists of all types such as a bulk ship, barge carrier, cargo ship, container ship, roll-on/roll-off ships, vehicle container, chemical tankers, petroleum tankers, and passenger ships. Many numbers of ships in the U.S. are owned by American interest but are registered or flagged in other countries.

International Maritime Organization:

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) also known as the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) was formed in Geneva in 1948, but it came in force about ten years later in 1959. In 1982 the name IMCO was changed to IMO.

IMO headquarter is in London, the United Kingdom, it is a specialized agency of the United Nations with 169 states member and three associate members. The agenda of IMO is to maintain shipping framework, safety, environmental care, legal matters, and security concern. It is governed and financed by the council of members elected by the Assembly.
