The largest lake completely contained within the state is Lake Eufaula. The lake, which is on the Canadian River, was created when the Eufaula Dam was built. At 87 feet, Lake Eufaula’s maximum depth almost quadruples its average depth of 23 feet.

How to Get to Lake Eufaula

Situated on I-40 close to Eufaula, Oklahoma, Lake Eufaula is officially called Eufaula Lake by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Additionally, U.S. Highway 69 runs north and south across the lake. Lake Eufaula is located somewhat more than an hour west of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and roughly two hours east of Oklahoma City. Travel time from Tulsa is around one and a half hours, and from McAlester it is less than thirty minutes.

Recreation Opportunities at Lake Eufaula

Nestled in the center of eastern Oklahoma is Lake Eufaula, which offers an extensive range of recreational options. There are leisurely activities and leisurely enjoyment to be had on and around this stunning lake.


All year long, people can go fishing from boats, the shore, or climate-controlled marinas. Largemouth, smallmouth, and white bass are stocked at Lake Eufaula, which also hosts annual tournaments. The lake is home to several species of fish, including sunfish, crappie, and catfish.

There are plenty more exciting options in the state parks near Lake Eufaula and other recreation sites. Disc golfing and golf courses are among them. Both expert and beginner equestrian riders can enjoy horseback riding at stables. In certain places, ATV rides are permitted. If you have the right licenses, hunting is a popular hobby throughout the hunting season. These are only a handful of the year-round recreational options available at Lake Eufaula.
